“Leadership is influence… Nothing more, nothing less.” – John Maxwell
When you decide to begin side-hustling as a Christian youth speaker, you not only begin creating opportunities to bring in some supplemental income, but you begin to increase your influence in the youth ministry world at-large as well.
YOU HAVE SOMETHING WE NEED
The Apostle Paul describes the church as the “Body of Christ.” As he writes to the Corinthians, “…The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, I don’t need you!‘” (1 Corinthians 12:21, NIV) As a leader in the church world, God has wired you, gifted you, called you, and given you insight, wisdom, and His Word for His people. In short, you have something to say that we need to hear. When you begin speaking at other youth ministry events (beyond just for your own students), you give God an opportunity to use you to share your insights with the greater Body of Christ.
WHAT ABOUT FAME?
Peter reminds his readers of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” (1 Peter 1:24-25) If your motive to begin a speaking ministry is to become famous, you’re probably being short-sighted, prideful, and missing out on some incredibly amazing eternal fruit. While fame is fleeting, being a person of humble influence can advance the Kingdom and transform the world for generations to come.
INCREASING YOUR INFLUENCE
Professional speaking not only provides the opportunity to influence students and churches outside of your own, it can also open the door for increased influence through blogging, Facebook groups, YouTube channels, or even by writing books or magazine articles.
What other churches, student ministries, or youth pastors do you know who could benefit from the wisdom and gifting you have to offer? Think about how a retreat speaker can give the same Biblical wisdom that you give your students on a weekly basis, yet for some reason the lightbulb goes off and your students finally get it. As a youth speaker, you can influence students outside of your group differently that you influence the students within your own local church youth ministry.
